Join us for an unforgettable night of music and conversation with Kaiyo and Malcolm Earle Smith!
Malcolm Earle Smith is one of the UK’s most versatile and expressive
jazz trombonists, vocalists, and educators, celebrated for his deep command of
the jazz tradition from early New Orleans styles to bebop and beyond.
After studies at the Guildhall School of Music, he joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, quickly rising to the lead trombone chair. His career since has spanned collaborations with many of the UK’s most respected artists, including John Dankworth, Henry Lowther, Liam Noble, Digby Fairweather, and international soul legends Martha Reeves and Ronnie Spector. He has also toured extensively with Bryan Ferry, appearing on the albums As Time Goes By and The Jazz Age, as well as Ferry’s soundtrack for The Great Gatsby.
As a bandleader, Earle Smith has released several acclaimed albums,
beginning with Lyric Trombone (1996), praised by Mingus trombonist Jimmy
Knepper, and more recently the vocal‑focused Vocal Intent (2022). His projects
include the Basin Street Brawlers, Three Way Stretch, and the Nevada Street
Four, each highlighting his stylistic breadth and deep musical curiosity.
Equally at home in vintage swing, modern jazz, and contemporary vocal
performance, Malcolm Earle Smith continues to be recognised for his
versatility, artistry, and enduring contribution to the UK jazz landscape.
