“Always loving the work of Mr Phelps - a complete trumpet innovator who is literally fearless in his musical expression. This show promises to be something really special and will mark Jay out as one the UK’s most inventive arrangers for his unique interpretation of this well loved Miles Davis classic.” Tony Minvielle, JazzFM
Prior to the release of Kind of Blue — the best-selling jazz album of all time — Miles was busy in the studio working with the same iconic line-up of musicians: Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb.
In 1958, the year before Kind of Blue, the album ’58 Miles was released and set the stage for the birth of the world’s greatest jazz record the following year. These albums defined a ground-breaking new approach to the art of improvisation.
With five sold-out shows at the Jazz Café already under their belt and a major UK tour, the two sets presented by Phelps feature music from ’58 Miles and Kind of Blue. To bring this to life, Jay has assembled a line-up of the UK’s very best jazz musicians.
Jay has also just completed a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe with Miles., a play he conceptualised and starred in for his acting debut.
